Who Can Join

The Hawthorne Caballeros Senior Drum & Bugle Corps is open to any horn player, percussionist, rifle or silk performer who has the time, enthusiasm and energy to commit to a demanding schedule with the greatest drum and bugle corps of all time. Most members have some prior musical or performing experience with a high school or college marching band, a junior or senior drum and bugle corps, winter guard, dance troupe or other ensemble. While past experience is not a prerequisite, potential new members will need to demonstrate sufficient skills in their area in order to be accepted as a member.

Rehearsal Schedule

The Cabs begin informal rehearsals in November which run until Christmas time. After the New Year, official rehearsals are held every other weekend until the spring. Then, rehearsals run on Friday evenings, most Saturdays and each Sunday. After the season officially begins in mid-June, rehearsals are held Friday evenings, all day Saturdays before Saturday evening contests, and Sunday afternoons. The week prior to championships (Labor Day weekend), extra rehearsals may be called for fine-tuning. Extra rehearsals may also be called throughout the year as deemed necessary by the instructional staff.

Financial Obligations

Corps members have an annual assessment which will be announced at the annual Open House.  This assessment can be met through numerous fund raising opportunities throughout the season.  No money need be spent out of pocket to meet the assessment if you just participate in our fundraising opportunities.

Uniforms and Equipment

Uniforms will be supplied to all corps members. Corps members will be responsible for obtaining a black pair of patent leather-style shoes, with laces and plain toe. Black socks are also required for the uniform, as is a plain white t-shirt with no designs or printing. Suspenders may be worn under the uniform, provided they cannot be seen through the fabric. Corps members are responsible for maintaining their uniforms, keeping them pressed and cleaned. A garment bag of some type is required for transporting the uniform.

Horns will be supplied to players who need them; however, players who own horns or have access to borrow them are encouraged to use them. For percussionists, snare drummers will be responsible for purchasing the sticks of choice for the line. Latin players will need to purchase appropriate sticks, as well. Due to their high cost, bass drummers, tenors and mallet players will be supplied implements by the corps.

Responsibilities for Performances

The Cabs travel around the east coast for their contests. For most shows, traveling to the contest site is the responsibility of the member. For trips that are farther away, buses are supplied for corps members unable
to travel on their own.

Corps members are responsible for being prepared to do the very best job possible at all performances—from parades to stage shows to contests. This generally requires that members practice at home during the week, in addition to time at rehearsals.

Members are expected to participate in all performances, including parades on major holidays, contests, stage shows and exhibitions at college, high school or professional football games. Generally, some combination of these activities comprise the year's performance schedule. For example, the Cabs are regularly featured for half-time at home games of the New York Giants.
